Soft targets are historically, the largest source of causalities from terrorism.  Soft targets have been attacked in nearly every country including the United States.  Western democracies are inherently "target rich" and therefore, more susceptible to terrorist attacks.   Building on its work developing RAMCAP, ASME-ITI is now focusing its efforts on the problems associated with such things as public gathering spaces, commercial buildings, entertainment venues and shopping centers.  This activity is generating updated codes, standards, design specification and best practices that serve as the basis for improved security and resiliency.
