Water and Wastewater Standard

Diablo Dam Washington

Standard for Water and Wastewater Treatment Utilities

ASME-ITI and the American Water Works Association (AWWA) have jointly developed an American National Standard for water sector utilities based on the RAMCAP Sector Specific Guidance for Water Systems and the RAMCAP Plus® approach.

Its features include:

  • Both risk and resilience analysis and management
  • Risks to both the owner of the facilities and the community it serves
  • Resilience measured at both asset and utility-wide levels
  • All hazards - man-made (terrorism, crime and vandalism); natural (floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, etc.); dependencies (supply chain, personnel other utilities, etc.) and proximity to dangerous sites.
  • A proxy indicator of the likelihood of terrorist attack
  • Direct comparability over time to subsequent assessments to measure progress in risk reduction and resilience enhancement
  • Direct comparability to other water/wastewater utilities as well as to seven other infrastructure sectors of the economy - nuclear power, chemical, manufacturing, dams and locks, etc.

The J100 standard and associated training course are available for purchase from AWWA. This standard is designed to help water and wastewater utilities identify potential threats to U.S. water infrastructure and prepare for or mitigate damage.

Both AWWA and ASME-ITI are fully accredited as Standards Development organizations by the American National Standards Institute
