Medical, Industrial and Academic Nuclear (MIAN) facilities

ASME-ITI has recently received a grant from the prestigious Sloan Foundation to develop a risk-based methodology to help identify and prioritize significant risk to the public from radioactive materials.  Radioactive materials that do not meet the grades and quantities needed for power generation or nuclear weapons are a significant concern.  These materials can be used in a radioactive dispersal device (RDD) , so-called “dirty bombs”, exposed to unprotected people, or released into the environment as a radioactive exposure device (RED) .  Either could potentially cause fatalities, serious injuries, environmental damage and/or costly decontamination or abandonment of valuable locations.
